When I was just 6 years old my parents observed me glued to a piano at a big family gathering. They immediately bought me a piano. Both my parents were school teachers and I have 5 siblings, so we had very modest means. I am forever grateful that they spotted my interest and encouraged music in my life. Some of my earliest memories are my father driving me to and from music lessons in piano, guitar, vocal and band practice at Randers Music School. Growing up in Randers in Denmark, there were very many social etiquettes. You were not really supposed to shine. I remember having such an incredibly big stage fright! I didn’t like the spot light. I would often perform at recitals, but my memories mostly surround slippery wet hands dancing over the piano and a shaking leg trying to hit the piano pedal at the right time while singing completely out of tune with a heartbeat pounding on my vocal chords.
Writing music was my absolute favourite. Later on when I moved to NYC, I finally got out of my box and jumped on stage feeling comfort in not knowing anybody in the audience. I learned channelling anxiety into being nervous and seeing nervousness as something positive. Butterflies in my belly were good.
I started creating stage outfits and video projections on stage. I made a band with my friends and instead of hiding in the rehearsal space, Cecilie Beck and The Elements played every single dive bar and smaller venue from Brooklyn to Queens and Harlem. Our favourite venue was Nublu in the East Village, but we also played The Bitter End in Greenwich Village, where some of my biggest idols like Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell were hanging on the walls, sharing the history of the stage we played. Coming from a small town in Denmark, it was humbling and inspiring.
I’ve recorded and produced music with some epic producers. When I worked with Grammy-award winning producer Fran Cathcart, I started getting really inspired to learn the craft myself. I recalled one of my first spiritual readings I ever had. The psychic told me that she saw a bat in front of her and claimed that my hearing was extremely sensitive, deep and developed. I now produce almost all of my own music and the music of Gate to Venus. I just turned 40, and I finally feel like I found my true voice.
I now enjoy every single part of making music - writing, performing, recording and making all of the artwork around it - music videos and cover art. I even make it for other artists as well.
